Cloud computing refers to anything that involves delivering hosted services via the internet. These services are divided into three categories:

  • Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS);
  • Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS);
  • and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

A cloud service has three clear characteristics:

  • This service is sold on demand, usually by the minute or the hour.
  • It’s ‘elastic’ nature allows the network to adapt to workload changes.
  • The service is managed by the provider (all the consumer requires is access to the internet).

Cloud computing can be private or public. A public cloud sells services to anyone on the internet, eg. Amazon Web Services. Notably, Amazon is also the largest public cloud provider. In contrast a private cloud is a proprietary network that supplies hosted services to a limited number of people. The goal of cloud computing (public and private) is to provide easy, fast, smart, reliable and adaptable access to IT resources and services.

Private cloud services are delivered from a business’s data centre to internal users. This model offers the versatility and convenience of the cloud. Whilst maintaining the management, control and security features common to local data centres. In the public cloud model, a third-party cloud service provider delivers the cloud service via the internet. In truth public cloud services are sold on demand.

A hybrid cloud is a combination of public cloud services and an on-premise private cloud. What’s more, a collaboration of coordination and automation takes place between the two. Companies can run mission-critical workloads or sensitive applications on the private cloud and use the public cloud to handle workload tasks. The goal of a hybrid cloud is to create a unified, automated, scalable environment that uses the capabilities that public cloud infrastructure provides. All the while maintaining control over mission-critical data.
