IT Infrastructure is the foundation or framework that supports a system or organization. In computing, information technology infrastructure is composed of physical and virtual resources that support the flow, storage, processing and analysis of data. Notably, infrastructure may be centralized within a data centre, or it may be decentralized and spread across several data centres. Additionally, this is controlled by the organization or by a third party, such as a cloud provider.

A data centre infrastructure often includes the power, cooling and building elements necessary to support the data centre hardware. The data centre hardware infrastructure usually involves:

  • Servers;
  • storage subsystems;
  • networking devices, like switches, routers and physical cabling; and
  • dedicated network appliances, such as network firewalls.

A data centre infrastructure also requires that the IT infrastructure security be given the necessary attention.
This includes the following:

  • Physical security for the building, such as electronic key entry.
  • Constant video and human surveillance of the premises.
  • Carefully controlled access to the server and storage spaces, etc.

Only authorized personnel will be able to access the data centre hardware infrastructure which reduces the potential for malicious damage or theft.

Cloud computing is however changing the way infrastructures are designed and implemented. Where business-owned data centres are private, capital-intensive resources (as can be seen from the above), cloud computing enables organizations to access a cloud provider’s data centre infrastructure and services for a fee. This infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) model allows flexible computing on demand. Users can utilise a cloud provider’s compute storage services, without having to deploy and install those resources locally. Cloud infrastructure usage can also be adjusted to the workload needs of business reorganization. Becoming much more efficient and cost effective.
